Black Friday falls on November 27 this year and Cyber Monday on November 30. The smart home gear most worth watching is the cheap, useful stuff: Matter smart plugs, outdoor plugs for holiday lights, and smart Christmas lights. This page lists the picks from our buying guides by budget tier, with a note on how each one works with Home Assistant, so you can tell a good deal from a dead end when the prices drop.
How to tell a real deal
- Check the price history. A “deal” can be the usual price with a crossed-out number next to it. A price tracker or the listing’s recent price range will show you whether it’s actually lower.
- Check the seller. On Amazon, look at “Ships from” and “Sold by” under the price. Some picks below are sold by third-party sellers, which we note.
- Check the model. Smart plugs and lights often come in look-alike versions. Matter support in particular is often limited to one model number, so match it to the one in our guide.
- Check how it connects. Matter, Z-Wave and Zigbee devices can be controlled locally by Home Assistant. Matter over Thread also needs a Thread border router.

Zooz ZEN05 800LRThe Z-Wave pick: IP65, Z-Wave Long Range, and no load on your Wi-Fi. You need a Z-Wave stick for Home Assistant. Mind the load: the Zooz manual allows only 150 W of LED bulbs. When we checked, the Amazon listing was sold by a third-party seller, so check the seller before you buy.

Before the lights go up
Plugs and lights are only half the job. Our free Christmas lights automation blueprint turns them on at sunset and off at bedtime in Home Assistant. If a Matter-over-Thread device won’t pair, our pairing fixes explainer works through the usual causes in order.
