For most homes, Govee Christmas Lights 2 is the pick: they’re the best value of the three, rated for outdoor use, and the most open to Home Assistant, with two local routes (Matter and Govee’s local API). Choose Philips Hue Festavia if you already have a Hue Bridge and want the lights to behave like the rest of your Hue setup. Choose Twinkly if the light show itself is the hobby. Its camera-mapped effects are the most advanced, it has no Matter support, but Home Assistant can still control it locally.
The one thing to know first: effects stay in the maker’s app
Matter can put holiday lights into Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or Home Assistant, but its lighting model only carries the basics: on/off, brightness, one color and color temperature. As Smartifiers’ October comparison puts it, the chases, twinkles and music sync “live in the manufacturer’s own app.” That’s fine for the things you’d actually automate (on at sunset, off at bedtime, off when everyone leaves), but it means you’ll still open the maker’s app for the show.
Home Assistant is the exception for two of these brands. Its Govee and Twinkly integrations talk to the lights over your local network and can reach some of the saved effects, which Matter can’t.

Govee Christmas Lights 2: best for most homes
Govee Christmas Lights 2, 99 ft (H70C5) · also in 66 ft (H70C4)
- What you get: individually addressable RGBWIC LEDs, including dedicated warm-white LEDs, with scene modes, music modes and shape mapping in the Govee app. Govee’s listing for the 99 ft set says 300 LEDs. Smartifiers reports US lengths up to 328 ft.
- Works with: Alexa and Google Assistant, plus Matter, per Govee’s listing, which also gets it into Apple Home and SmartThings.
- Home Assistant: two local options. Add it with the Matter integration for on/off, brightness and color. Or use Home Assistant’s Govee lights local integration, which lists both the H70C4 and H70C5. It uses Govee’s LAN API, which you turn on in the Govee app. Home Assistant’s docs note that some scenes may not work on every model.
- Outdoor caveat: Govee’s listing says to “place the power adapter within a watertight box for outdoor use” and that the adapter can’t be immersed in water.
- Downsides: each string is another 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi device, and Smartifiers notes the Govee app expects a Govee account for its advanced features. Check the Wi-Fi signal where the lights will hang.
Twinkly Strings: best for light shows
Twinkly Strings (no Amazon link yet: see the note below)
- What you get: Twinkly’s signature feature is mapping. You point your phone’s camera at the tree, and the app works out where each LED sits, so effects follow the real shape of your display.
- Works with: Twinkly’s help center lists Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Razer Chroma. It doesn’t list Matter. Its page for the newer HD Strings lists Alexa, Google Home, Homey, Razer Chroma and OMEN Light Studio, but not HomeKit, so check the box for the model you’re buying.
- Home Assistant: the built-in Twinkly integration works locally and is usually discovered automatically. It handles on/off, brightness, static colors and switching between operation modes. Effect control needs Twinkly firmware newer than 2.7.1, and effects only appear after you apply them from the Twinkly app (Movie mode), and playlists also have to be uploaded from the app first. Music mode and real-time control aren’t supported. Home Assistant recommends giving the lights a fixed IP address on your router.
- Downsides: no Matter, and the lowest outdoor rating of the three in Smartifiers’ comparison.
Philips Hue Festavia: best if you already have Hue
Philips Hue Festavia string lights, 65 ft- What you get: Hue’s color quality and warm whites, on Zigbee rather than Wi-Fi. Smartifiers reports that the Hue app works over Bluetooth on its own, but a Hue Bridge adds the full effects library and music sync, and shares the lights through Matter. In 2026, Signify added curtain, net and icicle versions.
- Works with: Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home through the Hue Bridge.
- Home Assistant: through the Philips Hue integration, which talks to the Hue Bridge locally. Scenes you create in the Hue app are imported automatically as scene entities, and on current bridges each room and zone has a scene selector. That’s how to trigger a Festavia effect from Home Assistant: save it as a Hue scene first.
- Downsides: you need a Hue Bridge for Home Assistant control. Smartifiers rates it IP54, fine for a covered porch or roofline but less tough than Govee’s lights.
We haven’t connected these lights to Home Assistant ourselves. The Home Assistant notes above come from each integration’s documentation.
Which should you buy?
- Most people, or long outdoor runs: Govee Christmas Lights 2.
- You already have a Hue Bridge: Festavia.
- You want a mapped light show and don’t need Matter: Twinkly.
- You just want your existing lights on a schedule: skip new lights and use an outdoor smart plug.
Automate whichever you choose
All three show up in Home Assistant as light entities, so our Christmas lights automation works with them: on at sunset, off at bedtime with separate weekend times, off when everyone’s away, and only during the season you choose. Pick them in the blueprint’s lights list and you’re done.
