The safest smart home gift under $50 is a Matter smart plug, because it works with whichever assistant the person already uses: Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home or SmartThings. Our picks: the Tapo P400M outdoor plug for holiday lights, or the tiny Tapo P125M for indoors. None of the gifts below needs a subscription to do its main job, and most of them keep working if the person moves to Home Assistant later.

Under $25

Tapo P125M Matter smart plug

TP-Link Tapo P125M

A compact indoor plug that turns any lamp, string of tree lights or fan into something they can schedule or switch by voice. TP-Link’s listing says it works with Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home through Matter, joins 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and handles 15 A / 1800 W.

A short tier on purpose: below $25, the gifts that work reliably with every assistant are mostly plugs. Two of these make a better present than one cheaper gadget.

Under $50

Tapo P400M outdoor plug

TP-Link Tapo P400M

The holiday-lights gift. Two outlets they can switch separately, IP65, and Matter over Wi-Fi, so it works with Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home and SmartThings per TP-Link. Our outdoor smart plugs for Christmas lights guide compares it with other outdoor plugs.

Kasa EP40M outdoor plug

TP-Link Kasa EP40M

Another two-outlet Matter outdoor plug, rated IP64. TP-Link lists the free Kasa app and a Kasa account as a setup requirement and says it must go into a GFCI outlet outdoors, which most outdoor outlets should be anyway.

Aqara Presence Sensor FP300

Aqara Presence Sensor FP300

For the person who wants lights that turn on when they walk in and stay on while they sit still. Aqara’s listing describes it as a battery-powered mmWave presence sensor that also detects motion, light, temperature and humidity. It supports Matter over Thread or Zigbee, and lists Apple Home, Home Assistant, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings.

Under $100

Echo Dot (5th Gen)

Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen)

A good first smart speaker for an Alexa household, and a hub for the plugs above: Amazon’s listing says it can set up Matter devices over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Look elsewhere if the person already uses Google Home or Apple Home.

Govee Christmas Lights 2, 66 ft

Govee Christmas Lights 2 (66 ft, H70C4)

Color-changing string lights with app effects, for a tree or porch. Govee’s listing says they work with Alexa and Google Assistant and are Matter-compatible, which also gets them into Apple Home. For outdoor use, Govee says to keep the power adapter in a watertight box.

Our smart Christmas lights comparison puts these against Twinkly and Philips Hue Festavia.

Gifts that need no Home Assistant at all, and a reason to try it

Every pick here works on its own in Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home. If the person on your list likes to tinker, they’ll find the same plugs and lights can do more in Home Assistant. Our free Christmas lights automation blueprint turns them on at sunset, off at a set bedtime that can differ on weekends, and off when everyone leaves.
